During training, the 2002 colt became injured.
It may have kept him from the performance arena,
but it didn’t
prevent the folks at D4 Quarter Horses
from recognizing Boonie’s stallion potential.
For starters, they bred seven mares – the next year,
people started paying attention.
To date, Boonie is sound and healthy and has over
125 babies on the ground that reflect their sire’s balance,
temperament, and solid bone.
Many are currently in training – including two
youngsters
preparing for the 2008 Futurity.
All show promise.
Breeder Dale Gurney put it this way:
“My foals look so much like Boonie.
They are square
son-of-a-guns!
Good foot and stand right up,
and they are a colorful bunch as well.
All have strong behinds
and clean throats.
One colt is so square, we call him Hercules.
One filly looks like a red version of Royal Blue Boon,
so elegant and feminine, but with strength.”
The DeFoors showcased the power
behind that progeny at the
Western Bloodstock’s 6th
Annual Super Stallion Saturday, held this past
December at the NCHA World Championship Futurity
in Ft Worth, Texas. Public reception was extraordinary,
Kip said, and Boonie spent more time out with his
admirers than in his stall. When it was all over,
the DeFoors walked away with numerous breeding
contracts and the assurance of many
more in the coming weeks.
